Dribbling is one of the most basic of all soccer skills, being able to carry the ball past an opponent while maintaining control is a must.  If a player does not know how to dribble then he can not play the game.

No matter what position a player plays, dribbling is a must.  Dribbling is used to move the ball up field while creating space, too many times players will pass the ball when there is not pressure on them, I teach my players to dribble until pressure is applied or to such a time when another player is in scoring position.

No matter what age, it is essential that players learn to dribble the ball using both feet and all surfaces of the foot, especially the instep and outside of the foot.  All them to dribble anywhere on the field, once they feel comfortable with dribbling on an open field you should set up cones whereupon they can dribble around same.   Always put emphasis on players not looking down but rather looking around for other players to pass to.

As they progress, have players dribble against one another, as they become more comfortable going 1 on 1, have them  break up to 2 v 2 and 3 v 3.    This require them to learn when and how to pass effectively.

Dribbling drills should make up at least 1/4 of all practice time including when you have the kids run laps.
